Are your present toilets water wasters?

The American Water Works Association say that toilets account for about 30% of indoor water usage and use more water daily than any other indoor fixture, especially toilets installed before 1994, which on average use 3.5 to 7.0 gallons of water for every flush. In fact, older toilets can use as much as 4 times the amount of water as a modern Low-Flow toilet. And with each person flushing several times a day, that’s a lot of water (and money) going down the drain.

Not only money is being wasted. Water is a precious, natural resource that is vital to our health and welfare. Converting to water efficient toilets can help to preserve our stored volume of fresh water. This type of water savings can help to meet our community’s needs both now and in the future.

It Pays to Save Water

Now there’s an easy way to reduce your water use, upgrade your bathrooms, and save money on your water bill. Simply switch to a new Low-Flow (LF) toilet and you can save thousands of gallons of water every year. And lower water use means lower bills. By replacing your old toilets with new 1.6 gallon(LF) toilets, a typical household can save 7,000 to 20,000 gallons of water a year.

The City of Charlottesville wants to help you save on your waterbill and to conserve water by offering a rebate of $100* towards the installation and cost of a (LF) toilet. You must be replacing an older toilet that is not low flow with a new low flow 1.6 gallon flush toilet.

To qualify for the Rebate you must:

* Be a home/rental property owner and replace an old 3.5 to 7.0 gallon toilet with a new low flow 1.6 gallon toilet
* Buy your water from the City of Charlottesville
* Purchase the replacement toilet(s) after 6/30/2002
* Provide us with a receipt for the toilet and/or installation along with completed rebate form.

The rebate (up to $100) can be used to cover the cost of the toilet and/or the expense of installation. The amount can be credited to your account or mailed out as a reimbursement check. Only three (3) rebates per utility account (you may replace 3 toilets, the maximum rebate per toilet is $100.00).

• Check all hose connections for leaks and make sure the condensate tube is draining freely.
• Change or clean the furnace filter once a month to maintain indoor air quality. This is especially important during the summer when dust and allergens circulate.
• Clean the outside compressor by spraying it with a hose.
• Keep plantings at least one foot away for adequate airflow around the entire unit.
• Vacuum registers and air vents regularly.
• Have your ductwork professionally cleaned every few years.
• Keep furniture and drapes away from registers.
• During the winter, keep the compressor covered and remove window air conditioners.

While you’re working around your air conditioner, be sure to shut off the power at the service panel before you start.

Cooling without an air conditioner

Of course, the best way to prolong the life of your air conditioner is to never use it. There are lots of easy ways to keep your cool without losing your cash:

• Plant a tree - it’s the best cooling investment your can make.
• Use floor or ceiling fans to help circulate air throughout the house.
• Install a whole-house fan - it can lower the indoor temperature by ten degrees in just a few minutes.
• Make sure your attic is properly ventilated, especially if you have good insulation. A combination of ridge and soffit or gable vents can help reduce cooling costs by ten percent.
• Shade south- and west-facing windows with blinds or drapes during the hottest parts of the day.
  Turn off lights you don’t need.
• Wait to use heat-producing appliances like ovens, dishwashers and clothes dryers until late evening.
